The Thistle is a 17' open dinghy designed for racing and daysailing. The Thistle was designed in the 1940's by Sandy Douglas, of International Canoe and 14 fame, and first built in 1945. The sail plan consists of a main, jib, and spinnaker. The boat can be easily rigged by one person. We race them with a crew of two or three, although they can be sailed by one person in lighter air, and comfortably daysail with up to six.

We are please to offer space on a spectator boat this year to watch the 2013 Thistle MidWinters West. This is with the father of Steven Hale, one of our competitors. The boat is a beautiful J-130 (Sirocco) and will be docked in Quivira basin, Marina Villiage, just 1.75 miles from MBYC.

He plans to take people out on the ocean Thurs and Fri to view ocean racing. He probably can take 10 or so comfortably. So far he has 4-5 people interested (from Northern California, and East Coast).

Spectating can be fun for families traveling from far away and not racing. If there are any friends and families of folks racing it might be nice for them to be out watching the racing. People would just have to contact Steven Hale to reserve your spot. He can be contacted at  This email address is being protected from spambots.
